January 2024 Newsletter
Durango and Silverton No. 473 Mikado leads us into this month’s newsletter. Built in 1923 for the Denver and Rio Grande Western by American Locomotive Company in Schenectady, New York, the K-28 is a 2-8-2 wheel arrangement locomotive. The chassis is an outside-frame design with the drive wheels placed between the two main frames and the steam cylinders and running gear (cranks, counterweights, rods, and valve gear) to the outside. This design enables operation on D&RGW’s 3’ narrow gauge network. D&SNGRR maintains two additional K-28 locomotives (No. 476 and No. 478) as well as four K-36 locomotives (No. 480, No. 481, No. 482, and No. 486) built by Baldwin Locomotive Works.

Member Railroads
As previously reported, the last operating session
of Jim Harper’s O scale railroad was held during our November Layout Tour. With help from Jim Allen and Bob Jarvis, Jim disassembled his exquisite layout in preparation for transporting to Eugene, OR. Beverly Harper took these photos
during the disassembly process to share with club members. Note: Jim
has various items (lumber, fluorescent fixtures, among other things) available to club
members. Contact him at harperj1233@gmail.com to arrange a
visit to Jim’s house to review the items.
Dale and Karyn Angell (Toy Man TV) visited several
club member layouts during the November tour.
Last month you might recall their video of Jim Harper’s railroad was featured. Over the past few weeks, videos were posted on their YouTube channel of these layout visits.
